Прилагательные, употребляющиеся только как определения
1) Некоторые прилагательные в английском языке могут быть только определениями при существительных и не встречаются в позиции именной части сказуемого. К таким прилагательным относятся:
actual — действительный, фактический (как сказуемое в значении "актуальный" используются прилагательные urgent, pressing, important)
elder — старший (как сказуемое используется older)
eldest — самый старший (как сказуемое используется oldest)
following - следующий (как сказуемое используется as follows)
live - живой (в значении "не мертвый") (как сказуемое используется alive)
little - маленький (как сказуемое используется small)

His elder sister is a teacher — Его старшая сестра - учительница (Но: She's five years older than him — Она на пять лет старше его)

It was caused by the following reasons — Это было вызвано следующими причинами (но: The reasons for that are as follows - Причины этого следующие)

She lives in a nice little house - Она живет в милом маленьком домике (но: The house is quite small — Дом совсем маленький)

2) Как и в русском языке, в качестве части именного сказуемого в английском языке не могут выступать прилагательные, употребленные в переносном значении

heavy drinker — горький пьяница

real friend — настоящий друг

married life — семейная жизнь

social services — социальное обеспечение
